Shares & ordering

6 questions
What types of meat are included?

Currently, we only offer grass fed & finished beef.

We are working to add additional types of meat, and potentially fish, in the coming weeks. You can let us know what to prioritize adding and including in your deliveries when you sign up or by sending us a note at hello@hayandhaste.com!

Can I choose the specific cuts?

For now, every share has a set base that we pick for you, based on what we have available from our partner farms and ranches.

There are three ways you can customize your deliveries and make sure you love what we send you each month:
1) Complete our onboarding quiz to set your preferences; you can email us anytime to change these

2) Give us your feedback after each delivery - we'll use this to decide what to put in future deliveries (bonus - you'll get a discount on your next delivery every time you do this!)

3) Pick from our add-ons to further customize your next delivery

Why are deliveries sized by the serving? How much is a serving?

We pack enough meat so that once it's cooked, you've got at least 5 oz of finished meat per person.

That means our raw cuts, like steak, are packed at 8+ oz, and our already-cooked items, like meatballs, are packed at 5+ oz.

For context: the FDA's official "serving" of meat is just 3 oz cooked — about the size of a deck of cards. It's a decades-old minimum, not necessarily a real meal. On the other end, a typical restaurant steak runs 12-14 oz, more than four times that — sized to look impressive on a plate, not because your body needs that much protein at once.

We size portions around what actually works for a real dinner for most people, (plus a little wiggle room for leftovers). Nutrition research generally points to 30-40 grams of protein per meal as ideal for satiety and muscle maintenance in the average adult, and that's about what our servings deliver.

It's also a more honest number than what you'd get at the supermarket: wet-aged meat packs in extra liquid weight that you're paying for but never eat, on top of the normal moisture you'll lose once you cook it.

If you get a delivery and it seems to big or too small for you and your household, let us know! We can help you easily adjust to get it right.

What's in a typical delivery?

Every delivery is built around two things: what we've learned about your preferences, and what's available from our partner farms and ranches that month.

This isn't your average steak box. We want to make great quality, local meat fit your busy life... so alongside classic cuts of meat you'd find at the supermarket or butcher, we can include prepared items too (meatballs are first up).

The goal is simple: when you unpack it into your freezer, you should feel like you've got a few dinners in your back pocket.

And the more feedback you give us on what you love, the better we get at packing deliveries you'll be excited to stash in your freezer and eat each month.

How do you handle dietary restrictions?

Let us know when you're placing your order, or send us an email at hello@hayandhaste.com. We'll make sure everything we send you takes these into account!

Can I skip a month or cancel?

Yes, both!

You can skip your next delivery anytime before the cutoff (always the last day of the prior month). We'll send you an email before the cutoff to make it easy.

You can also skip a delivery, or pause / cancel your subscription anytime from your account.

Sourcing & quality

4 questions
Where do you source your meat from?

We work directly with small, family-owned and operated farms & ranches within a few hours of Missoula. All animals spend their whole lives on pasture and are free of added growth hormones and antibiotics.

Our beef comes exclusively from grass-fed, grass-finished herds. We prefer this beef for it's nutritional profile; grass fed & finished beef consistently shows higher omega-3 PUFAs, CLA, and a lower omega-6:omega-3 ratio than grain-finished beef.

Is your meat organic?

Not exclusively. We have found there are many great farms and ranches in our backyard that operate in alignment with our values and elect to skip the paperwork of organic certification. If they meet our standards, we'd rather include them in our supply chain than exclude them on the basis of a third-party certification.

How fresh is the meat?

Freezing, done right, is one of the most powerful tools for locking in flavor and nutrition. It pauses meat at its peak instead of letting quality slip away over time.

Supermarket meat typically is typically briefly (wet) aged, which means what you buy on the shelf is bulked up with extra water weight. A lot of that liquid is then lost during the cooking process. Some supermarket meat is packaged with carbon monoxide, which keeps it looking bright red and fresh well after its actual quality has started to decline.

In our experience, frozen straight from the farm is the better bet. All of our beef is dry aged 2-3 weeks, maximizing flavor and tenderness. It also means less loss in weight when you cook it. After dry-aging, the meat is packaged and frozen, locking in flavor and nutrients at their peak. This means we don't need any additives or gases to keep things looking fresh.

How is everything prepared?

Based on your preferences, your share may comprise of whole cuts and/or meat products crafted with whole ingredients in small batches. Our goal is to make it easy for you to have a protein-rich meal on a busy Tuesday night - no complicated recipes or slow cookers required.

All whole cuts are first dry-aged 2-3 weeks - this makes them as flavorful and tender as possible.

We will then prepare some cuts into prepared products that make weeknights a breeze. We're starting off by crafting recipes for meatballs in a variety of flavors, perfecting our recipes for mild italian, spicy italian, indian-inspired, and middle eastern-inspired flavors.

Delivery & storage

3 questions
How often do I get a delivery?

As we ramp up, all of our deliveries go out the first Wednesday of every month. A week or two before, we'll send you an email with a reminder. This is where you can either skip that delivery or pick additional items you want to include.

As more people join, we'll be able to offer more flexibility in our delivery model - so tell your friends! Once you sign up, you'll be able to give your friends $10 off their first delivery. For every friend that signs up, you'll get $10 off your next delivery!

Do you deliver to my address?

We hand-deliver inside the Missoula area — free within our local radius, with a $10 charge for an extended zone just outside it. Put your address into the checker and it'll tell you straight away.

If you're outside this zone, sign up for our emails so you can stay in the loop as we add additional locations!

Do I need to be home?

No. Deliveries are insulated and packed with dry ice to stay frozen for several hours on a porch or in a shaded spot. Tell us where to leave it and we will. We'll send you a text as soon as we drop it off, so you know how long it's been out there.
